The Cider Makers
Ecosystem
With Welsh Harlequin Ducks
& FJällnära Cows
Wonky Roots cider orchard is located in beautiful Österlen, in southern Sweden. We started planting our cider orchard in the Spring of 2022 and will be ready to make our first batch of cider in 2026. At the moment we have 2 hektars of only cider apples trees but will over the next few years expand the orchard to 8 hektars of the land. Cider is a wonderful drink with an incredible tradition and we simply can’t wait to share it with you.
Our orchard is a complete ecosystem
Our cider orchard is the beating heart of our farm. We believe that the only way to create magical products is to do so with the help of nature. We don’t use pesticides or spray our fields with chemical fertilizer’s instead we completely rely on natural processes, this includes having our very own team of Welsh Harlequin Ducks to keep the pests in check. Our beautiful heritage Fjällnära cows gladly mows the grass and together with the ducks and their pools fertilise the orchard.
The more the merrier

In our orchard we grow 6 categories of cider apples: sweets, sharps, bittersweets and bitter-sharps. bitter and red fleshed Primarily we grow French and British varieties but also have Swedish, German and Danish sorts perfect for making ciders. Currently we have 70 different varieties but aiming to be in the hundreds in the next coming years. We also stock many different sorts of red fleshed apple varieties. The best part is that we also sell trees from our very own nursery.
We love cider
In our orchard, we cultivate six categories of cider apples: sweets, sharps, bittersweets, bitter-sharps, bitter, and red-fleshed varieties. We mainly grow French and British cultivars, alongside selections from Sweden, Germany, and Denmark—each well-suited for cider production. At present, we have around 70 distinct varieties, with plans to expand into the hundreds in the coming years
Creating a balanced eco system
Cows and ducks in the orchard
In our Silvopasture we combine cider apple trees, Welsh Harlequin Ducks with our heritage Fjällnära cows. The system merges cider production with livestock, providing shade, shelter, and improved welfare for our ducks and cows, while creating multiple income streams and increasing biodiversity. On top of that it contributes to ecological balance, increase the proportion of pollinating insects and their permanent root system helps to retain water, store carbon dioxide and reduce eutrophication. By buying our eggs or meet you actually support all of that. We think that’s pretty cool!
